What Is a U Clamp?
A U-clamp, also known as a tube clamp or pipe fitting clamp, is a two-piece fastening component designed to hold, support, and stabilize tubing or piping on structural surfaces. DIN 3015 U-clamps generally consist of a clamp body, elastomer liner, cover plate, and mounting arrangement. They help prevent unwanted pipe movement, control vibration, maintain alignment, and protect tubing during pressure surges and thermal cycling. U-clamps are widely used for hydraulic tube lines, instrument piping, HVAC systems, chilled-water lines, pharmaceutical piping, steam networks, marine installations, and chemical process systems. Selection depends on tube outside diameter, pressure, temperature, material, liner, and mounting arrangement.
Types of U Clamps
Sachiya Steel International supplies different U-clamp configurations for specific operating conditions. DIN 3015 Part 1 Light Series clamps are designed for general hydraulic and instrument lines up to 100 bar. DIN 3015 Part 2 Heavy Series clamps provide reinforced construction for high-pressure applications, with ratings up to 400 bar for suitable smaller ODs. DIN 3567 pipe clamps are available for medium and heavy piping and building-service applications.
Anti-vibration U-clamps can be supplied with NBR, EPDM, neoprene, FKM, PTFE, PA6, or PP liners depending on service requirements. Weld-on U-Clamps are suitable for permanent structural mounting, while hygienic SS 316L clamps with electropolished surfaces are suitable for pharmaceutical and food-processing systems. Custom U-clamps can also be manufactured according to customer drawings, CAD models, and technical specifications.
U Clamp Technical Specifications
U-Clamps are available for tube outside diameters from approximately 6 mm to 219 mm ex-stock, with custom sizes available on request. Light Series clamps are generally used up to 100 bar, while Heavy Series clamps can reach up to 400 bar for appropriate small-O.D. applications. Installed service temperatures depend on the clamp liner and material, while stainless-steel base metal can withstand significantly higher temperatures.
Available materials include SS 304, SS 316/316L, Carbon Steel A105, Duplex 2205, Hastelloy C-276, Aluminum 6061-T6, PP, and PA6. Surface finishes include natural, zinc-plated, hot-dip galvanized, and electropolished options. Bolt grades include Grade 8.8 and 10.9 carbon steel, A2-70 stainless steel, A4-70/A4-80 stainless steel, and selected high-temperature materials. EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2 material certificates, PMI, CE, PED, and NACE documentation can be provided according to project requirements.
U Clamp Size Range
Common DIN 3015 reference sizes include 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 18, 22, 25, 28, 35, 42, 54, 63, 76, 89, 108, 133, 159, and 219 mm outside diameter. Bolt sizes range from M6 to M20 depending on clamp dimensions and series. Exact dimensions can vary according to the selected standard and configuration. Customers requiring an engineered clamp should provide tube OD, wall thickness, pressure, temperature, mounting arrangement, and application details for proper selection.
Material Selection
Material selection is important for long-term U clamp performance. SS 304 provides good corrosion resistance for general industrial, food, pharmaceutical, and HVAC applications. SS 316 and SS 316L provide improved chloride resistance and are suitable for marine, offshore, chemical and saline environments. Duplex 2205 offers higher resistance to chloride pitting and is suitable for seawater, offshore, and demanding chemical applications.
Carbon steel A105 is suitable for high-pressure applications in relatively non-corrosive environments when an appropriate coating is provided. Hastelloy C-276 is selected for severe chemical and acidic service. Aluminum 6061-T6 provides a lightweight option for aerospace, automotive, and test-rig applications, while PP and PA6 can be used for selected chemically aggressive, lower-pressure applications.
Industry Applications
U-Clamps are used extensively across industrial sectors. In oil and gas facilities, Heavy Series clamps secure hydraulic and instrument lines on pipelines, skids, and process equipment. Hydraulic systems use DIN 3015 Light and Heavy Series clamps for tube support and vibration control. HVAC installations use pipe clamps for refrigerant, chilled-water, and building-service lines.
Pharmaceutical facilities commonly use SS 316L hygienic clamps for cleanroom piping. Marine and offshore installations use SS 316L and Duplex 2205 because of their corrosion resistance. Power-generation systems use carbon-steel and alloy clamps for steam and condensate networks. Chemical-processing plants can use duplex or Hastelloy clamps for corrosive services. Food and beverage applications use stainless-steel hygienic configurations, while automotive and OEM systems may use aluminum or polymer clamp designs.
How to Choose the Right U Clamp
The correct U clamp should match the actual tube outside diameter rather than the nominal pipe size. The selected clamp must also be rated for the maximum system design pressure. The light series and heavy series selections should be based on operating pressure and tube size.
Temperature is another important factor. The clamp material and liner must be suitable for both minimum and maximum operating temperatures. Corrosive environments may require SS 316L, Duplex 2205, or Hastelloy C-276 instead of SS 304 or carbon steel. For vibrating or pulsating lines, an appropriate elastomer liner helps reduce fretting, noise, and tube damage.
The mounting arrangement should also be specified, including wall mounting, DIN rail mounting, weld plates, threaded rods, ceiling brackets, or structural beam arrangements. Applicable standards such as DIN 3015, DIN 3567, and ASME B31.3 should be stated in the RFQ wherever applicable.
Installation and Quality
Correct installation torque is important because insufficient tightening can allow clamp movement, while excessive tightening can deform the cover plate or liner. Torque should be applied using a calibrated wrench and should consider the bolt grade, thread condition, and project requirements.
Sachiya Steel International follows a documented quality process, including material identification, dimensional inspection, hardness testing, hydrostatic testing when required, visual inspection, and heat/batch traceability. EN 10204 3.1 MTC is available as standard, with 3.2 documentation available on request. PMI, CE, PED, and NACE MR0175 documentation can also be supplied according to project specifications.
